Dear

Today’s announcement from the Chancellor was encouraging on two fronts, the formal recognition of the devastating impact that our pubs and hospitality businesses are facing through Government restrictions and that ongoing support will be needed to safeguard our viable and valued sector.

We have been consistently taking your concerns, the reality of trading and the package of support that will be needed to Government directly and together with UKH and the BBPA.  This has ensured there has been a single aligned view into Government from our sector and the package of support needed was laid out in our recent letter to Paul Scully Minister, BEIS.

The measures announced today go some way towards supporting or sector through the short term challenges, however there is much more to be done to allow us to bounce back fully once Government restrictions are lifted.  There is clear demand for the Greatest British Pub, as was proved across the summer and we know that our pubs are a sound investment for the economy and jobs moving forward.

Trading realities

Many of you have taken valuable time to feedback your realities and priorities for support through our own surveys and our recent industry wide collaboration with UKH and BBPA, supported by CGA.

Could I personally thank you for the time that you have given to this and assure you that it has been a critical tool in engaging with Government, presenting them a clear licensee voice.  We will continue to check in with you as we navigate through this crisis, bringing real insight and evidence to decisions being made in Government.

Beyond the stark headlines on potential business failure and job losses without additional support, which were widely referenced in dialogue with Government and in the national press, there were a number of other key findings.

We have collated these into the following report specifically from the feedback from BII members.

Regional restrictions

The whole BII team are working hard to provide clear and actionable information as Government restrictions become ever more complex and differing by regions.  The details around the recent ‘firebreak’ announced by the Welsh Government, to come into effect this Friday, have been summarised in the following key guide below.

We will continue to provide you with the most up to date information for all regions of the UK as matters develop.  We are also updating our joint Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) guide working closely with our colleagues from UKH and BBPA, the latest version of which can also be viewed below.

Accessing support

The Chancellors announcement today provides specific sector support in the form of access to additional grants for pubs within Tier 2 as well as improvements in the Job Support Scheme.  Please find all of the details in the following guide.

Pubs at the Heart of our Communities

In addition to our work in providing clear and actionable information, against a sea of confusing messages from the general press and commentators, we are passionate about sharing the fantastic stories of our great pubs and their unique role in our communities.

Our recently launched national recognition programme, the BII Heart of the Community Award, gives us an opportunity to showcase what makes our pubs truly great, and share those stories to remind the general public (and Government) why they should support our pubs.  Please enter if you haven't already done so.

Many of you have taken time to contact your local MPs to gain their support in safeguarding our pubs, we would encourage as many of you to do this as possible to ensure that Government is in no doubt of the value of Great British Pubs.
