Dear

With just over a week to go until our pubs can begin to reopen their doors, we appreciate that many of you are busy making adaptations to your pubs in line with the Government guidance that was published earlier this week.

As you plan what will be required of your venue to welcome staff and customers safely back, we want you to know that we will be there at every step of the way, to support you however we can.

We respect that there is a significant amount of things to consider at this time, and we have made it our mission to provide clear, actionable information to you via our Helplines, emails, social media channels and website. As you saw on Wednesday, our team have created a step-by-step guide to help you navigate through the huge amounts of information currently surrounding the reopening of pubs - linked again at the bottom of this email.

This will help you in the creation of vital Risk Assessments that you can use, not only to satisfy the legal requirement on you as a business, but also to form a framework to plan the safe and successful reopening of your pubs.

We also understand that whilst for many of you, being a pub is the main part of your business, there are lots of you who have complementary elements to consider – especially taking into account the sharp rise in takeaway and delivery services over the last 4 months. Whether you are a wet led pub, a gastro pub with rooms, a single site operator or a multi venue business we can, and will support you.

In the guide and on our website, we have links to:

  • Government guidance for pubs, bars, restaurants & takeaways (in England )
  • Government guidance for pubs, bars, restaurants & takeaways (in Scotland with an estimated return date of 15th July)
  • Operational advice for pubs – created by the key industry trade bodies
  • Operational advice for the entire hospitality sector – created by the key industry trade bodies
  • NEW Q&A document to discuss some issues in more depth – developed in conjunction with UKH & BBPA

This is all supported by our new free EHO Helpline for members as well as their especially created Risk Assessment template and companion guide – all run for us by Shield Safety Group (SSG).

There has been a lot of conversation this week around whether the guidance is specific enough to enable us to interpret what is required of us as a sector. We believe that the flexibility of the guidance gives pubs an opportunity to manage their venues in a way that suits them. The support of our member Helplines is there as a safety net to give you as our BII members, the confidence you need to make that happen effectively, giving you time and space you need to focus on delivering an exceptional customer experience.

With the additional news of a relaxation of licensing regulations in the pipeline, we are also hopeful that this will enable you to broaden the useable space in many of your venues and allow you to diversify your offer going forward.

We have spent a lot of time, speaking to you over the last 4 months and sharing your thoughts, ideas, concerns and challenges. The BII News is a key way for us to share guidance, advice, expertise from across our sector, but most importantly, the experiences of you – our members.

We are delighted to say that the Summer edition of the BII News will be published next week. We have had strong feedback from you on the value you see in the BII News and felt it was important that you physically receive delivery of this key member benefit in the post.

We have created this edition with your business recovery in mind, and also to reflect the incredible work that you have done in your communities over lockdown. We are immensely proud of the work that licensees and their pubs do, and even more proud that we get to represent you as a collective.

The sharing of information & best practice and the collaboration that has been fantastic to see in our industry, has been vital to us all over this closure period of nearly 4 months. We want you to carry on sharing what you are doing, not only with us, your teams and industry colleagues, but most importantly with your customers.

Our joint consumer insight report with KAM Media earlier this month, highlighted how "information hungry" customers are. They need to know that they can return to your pub and have a safe and enjoyable experience, and the key to that is communication – whether it be on your website, on social media channels, on posters in your pubs or just simply with a phone call.

The more they know about what you have done to create a safe environment, and what to expect from the "new normal" in your pub, the more likely they are to feel comfortable to visit in the first place and most importantly return again and again.

We have today, spoken with Government to discuss the issues surrounding the collection of visitor data and will be updating you next week with how you can safely tackle that issue with confidence.

In the meantime, if there are any areas you need help with or questions you might have, please contact your BII Team on membership@bii.org who will be able to point you in the right direction.

BII CEO
